Shinju Matsuri Festival: Celebrating Broome’s diverse culture

In the early 20th century, Broome’s booming pearling industry brought people from across Asia—particularly Japan, China and Malaysia—who settled in this coastal town, enriching its culture and creating a vibrant community like no other. With influences reaching from Europe to the East, Broome became a uniquely multicultural town, united by its connection to the sea and the pearl.

Shinju Matsuri: Festival of the Pearl – A Celebration of Broome’s Multiculturalism

By 1969, a vision emerged: to create a festival that would celebrate this cultural richness, reflect Broome’s identity, and invite the world to share in its story. That vision became Shinju Matsuri – Festival of the Pearl, a community-led initiative designed to honour Broome’s diversity and attract visitors to the region during a time of economic hardship.

Driven by the Broome Junior Chamber of Commerce and supported by the town’s many cultural groups, the festival was imagined as a unified celebration—one that brought together annual traditions from across the community. Initiated to honour the traditions of Broome’s multicultural past, weaving together celebrations like the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival (Hang Seng), the Japanese O-bon (Festival of Souls), and the Malaysian Hari Merdeka (Independence Day), up to this day, continues to honour the traditions into a shared event that belongs to all of Broome.

When the festival was first created, Broome’s diverse communities were deeply committed to choosing a name that would honour the many cultures shaping the town. In a spirit of collaboration, they came together to select the name “Shinju Matsuri”, meaning Festival of the Pearl in Japanese, which stands as a tribute to both the multicultural roots of the town and the pearling industry that helped Broome shine on the world stage.
