Month of the Pearl

Born of the Sea: June’s Birthstone and Broome’s Most Beautiful Legacy

LEARN MORE

This June, we invite you to celebrate the Month of the Pearl, a time when one of nature’s rarest creations takes centre stage, both in story and in form. To mark the occasion, Broome pearling pioneers Allure South Sea Pearls take over this month’s blog, diving into the history and meaning of this revered gem, it’s significance for Broome, and an exclusive offer available now at the Allure South Sea Pearls showroom located in the lobby.

There is a particular kind of luxury that cannot be manufactured. It forms slowly beneath the surface of warm northern waters, shaped by time and nature’s own precision. The pearl is not made. It is revealed.

For those born in June, the pearl holds special significance as their birthstone. Soft in lustre and extraordinary in origin, it is the only gem created by a living creature. Where diamonds are mined, and sapphires are cut from rock, a pearl requires little more than pristine waters, patience and time.

A Gem with Meaning
Across cultures and centuries, pearls have symbolised purity, wisdom and integrity. In ancient Japan, they were believed to be the tears of sea nymphs. In classical Europe, no jewel was more closely associated with elegance and status. Cleopatra, according to legend, dissolved a pearl of immense value in vinegar and drank it to win a wager about the most extravagant feast in history.

For those celebrating a June birthday, a pearl is more than a gift. It is a symbol of rarity, authenticity and enduring beauty.

Broome and the Pearl
To understand the Australian South Sea pearl, you must first understand Broome.

This remarkable town on the Kimberley coast became one of the world’s most important pearling centres in the late nineteenth century. At its peak, Broome supplied much of the world’s mother-of-pearl shell.

Pearling luggers filled the harbour, while divers, many of them Japanese, Malay and Indigenous Australians, worked in challenging and often dangerous conditions to harvest shell from the ocean floor.

The legacy of pearling remains woven into Broome’s identity. The town’s rich multicultural heritage, deep connection to the sea and distinctive character all trace their origins to this industry.

Today, pearling has evolved into a world-leading aquaculture industry. From this transformation emerged one of Australia’s most celebrated natural treasures: the Australian South Sea pearl.

Allure South Sea Pearls
For more than three decades, Allure South Sea Pearls has been dedicated to showcasing the beauty of Australian South Sea pearls. Their pearls are cultivated in the pristine waters of the Kimberley and Pilbara regions, along the same remote coastline that has shaped Western Australia’s pearling history for generations.

What distinguishes a South Sea pearl is its exceptional size and luminous lustre. Grown in the silver-lipped Pinctada maxima oyster, these pearls are among the largest cultured pearls in the world, typically ranging from 9mm to 20mm. Their surface displays a remarkable depth of light, creating a glow that appears to come from within.

No two pearls are ever identical. Each reflects the unique conditions of its environment, from the waters in which it grew to the season in which it was harvested.

Allure’s collections celebrate this individuality through timeless strands, elegant earrings and contemporary pendants crafted to be treasured for years to come.
